Goodbye Mr. Mayville

Ralph was 97 years old when he left us last night to join his old buddies who made the ultimate sacrifice during World War II. You see, Ralph, Windsor’s own, was part of the First Special Service Force widely known as the Black Devils Brigade. That’s how I will always remember him.

Around 2012, as one of the few last members of that special force, Ralph Mayville was invited to Washington D.C to receive an honorary medal by then President Obama to acknowledge his contribution and bravery. To make this special trip happen, I was part of a great group of volunteers who organized a fundraiser to send him to the states.

My Insignia design was based on Ralph’s old T-shirt

For about two month, we approached the media, wrote letters and got the word out. Windsorites came through and their support was amazing. As part of this unique fundraiser for Ralph’s trip, I re-designed the insignia of the Black Devils and had it printed on black T-shirts.

The WindsorStar interview

We finally sent Ralph to D.C where he got his medal along side his last remaining American members of the Black Devils.

Mr. Mayville, you left behind a great history for Canadians, and we thank you for your service. Goodbye Ralph.
